Springdale is one of the best national park gateway towns with great lodging and restaurant options, including some beautiful higher-end properties. It’s super convenient to the park (some hotels are even walking distance to the visitor center). The downside is it’s fairly expensive, especially in peak season or at the last minute.
Booking far in advance is always one of the best strategies. And if Springdale is out of your budget, there are other options further from the park. But Zion is one of the Top 5 most popular national parks for a reason, so you need to plan ahead.

Where Should You Stay Near Zion? The Quick Answer
For most travelers, Springdale is the best place to stay for Zion National Park. You’re right outside the South Entrance, surrounded by restaurants and shops, and the free Springdale shuttle connects you to the park entrance during much of the year.
If you want to stay inside the park, Zion Lodge is the only option and gives you an unbeatable location in the middle of Zion Canyon.
For an upscale Springdale stay, Cliffrose Springdale is my first choice because you can walk to the park entrance and still have a resort-like setting along the Virgin River.
For families who want more space and a kitchenette, I really like Desert Pearl Inn. For better value while staying in Springdale, I’d look at Bumbleberry Inn or Driftwood Lodge.
If you’re willing to stay farther from the South Entrance, the trade-off can be lower rates or a completely different experience. Under Canvas Zion is my pick for glamping, while Zion Ponderosa Ranch Resort works particularly well for families, active travelers, and anyone combining Zion with Bryce Canyon.
And if hotel prices in Springdale are especially high, La Verkin or Hurricane can save money, but you’ll be adding driving time every day.
Why Where You Stay Matters
Where you stay at Zion affects much more than your hotel room. During most of the year, private vehicles cannot drive the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive. Instead, visitors use the free park shuttle to reach many of the iconic places and hikes like the Grotto, Emerald Pools, and the Riverside Walk to the Narrows.
Springdale has its own free shuttle that connects hotels and businesses throughout town with the pedestrian entrance to Zion. That means a well-located Springdale hotel can let you leave your car parked for much of your visit.
Staying inside the park at Zion Lodge gives you even easier access to the canyon, but at the expense of having easy access to everything Springdale offers, like great restaurants. Overnight guests can drive to the lodge during shuttle season, but you’ll still use the park shuttle or walk to reach trailheads farther up the canyon.
Stay farther out in La Verkin, Hurricane, Virgin, or on Zion’s east side, and you can often save money or get more space and resort amenities. The trade-off is additional driving and, for west-side visitors, dealing with parking or shuttle connections once you reach Springdale.

Springdale gives you easy access to restaurants, shops, amenities, and the park. Traffic in Springdale is definitely an issue, so staying further out can easily add 30-60 minutes or more of driving each day.
Where to Stay Near Zion: Understanding the Geography
Before you choose a hotel, it helps to understand that “near Zion” can mean very different things.
- Inside Zion National Park: Zion Lodge is the only hotel inside the park, located directly in Zion Canyon.
- Springdale: Immediately outside the South Entrance and the best choice for most visitors. Hotels, restaurants, and shops line the main road, and the Springdale shuttle makes it easy to reach the park without driving.
- Virgin: About 15 to 20 minutes west of Springdale. This is where you’ll find several of the area’s glamping properties.
- La Verkin and Hurricane: Roughly 30 to 45 minutes west of Zion. Hotel rates are often lower, and you’ll have more chain-hotel options, but you’ll drive to and from the park each day.
- Zion’s East Side: The East Entrance gives you access to a quieter side of Zion and works especially well if you’re continuing toward Bryce Canyon. Zion Ponderosa Ranch Resort is just outside this side of the park, but reaching Zion Canyon and Springdale takes considerably longer.
The right choice depends on whether your priority is minimizing driving, saving money, having more hotel amenities, or building Zion into a larger Utah road trip.
Prices: What to Expect
Hotel prices around Zion, especially Springdale, can be high. And they have gotten as variable as airline prices. In general, booking earlier is better. Prices tend to increase the closer you get to your dates. But unlike airlines, most hotel stays are refundable or have a modest upcharge for refundable rates.
Peak season is June to August and Spring Break, and prices will be the highest. September and October have become increasingly popular, and rates can also be high then, especially at the last minute.

Staying Inside Zion National Park
There is only one hotel inside Zion National Park: Zion Lodge. For travelers who value location above everything else, it’s hard to beat.
My Pick for the Full Zion Experience – Zion Lodge ⭐
Zion Lodge puts you right in Zion Canyon, surrounded by the park’s red cliffs, with the Emerald Pools trail nearby and a park shuttle stop at the lodge.
During shuttle season, overnight guests are allowed to drive to the lodge and park there with the access code provided with their reservation. That does not mean you can drive throughout Zion Canyon. You’ll still use the park shuttle or walk to reach trailheads farther up the scenic drive. But you won’t be waiting in line for the shuttle like everyone else at the Visitor Center.
The accommodations themselves are comfortable but fairly rustic. This isn’t a luxury hotel. You are staying here to wake up inside Zion and have easy access to the trails before the crowds arrive at the Visitor Center.
Dining is very limited compared with Springdale. Red Rock Grill and seasonal food options are available at the lodge, but there’s not much around the Lodge. This is the place to stay if you want peace and quiet, not a lively dining scene.
Why I recommend it: You’re paying for one of the best locations in the park, not a fancy room.
Zion Lodge currently accepts reservations up to 12 months in advance, and I’d book as early as you can for popular dates.

Staying in Springdale: My Pick for Most Zion Visitors
For most people planning a Zion trip, I recommend staying in Springdale. The town sits immediately outside Zion’s South Entrance, and you’re surrounded by restaurants, coffee shops, outfitters, and hotels with incredible red-rock views.
During shuttle season, the free Springdale shuttle runs through town and connects with the pedestrian entrance to Zion. From there, you walk across to the visitor center and board the park shuttle into Zion Canyon. Some hotels are even within walking distance to the visitor center without taking the Springdale shuttle.
A good Springdale hotel can dramatically reduce how much you use your car during your visit.
My Pick for Upscale Convenience – Cliffrose Springdale ⭐
The Cliffrose Springdale is a great combination of location and amenities.
It’s near the park entrance, set along the Virgin River, with landscaped grounds, heated pools, hot tubs, a spa, and an on-site restaurant.
You can walk to Zion or use the Springdale shuttle, and you still get more of a resort experience than you’d have at Zion Lodge. Some rooms and suites offer more space and kitchen facilities, which can also make Cliffrose work well for families.

Why I’d choose it: You get one of the best locations in Springdale without giving up the amenities of an upscale hotel. Cable Mountain Lodge is another great option for upscale amenities and an easy walk to the park.
My Pick for Families – Desert Pearl Inn ⭐
Desert Pearl Inn includes kitchenettes, private balconies or patios, and some configurations can accommodate larger families. It’s a great option for families who want more space.
The property also has a large seasonal pool and a riverside setting. Being able to make breakfast or pack lunches before heading into the park can be really useful at Zion, particularly if you’re starting early.
I’d also consider Desert Pearl for couples who want something quieter and more boutique than a traditional chain hotel.

My Pick for Value in Central Springdale – Bumbleberry Inn ⭐
Bumbleberry Inn is a family-owned property that has been around since 1972. It is famous for bumbleberry pie (which you can buy in the gift shop). It is also a solid value in expensive Springdale.
It’s right in the middle of town, the Springdale shuttle stops nearby, and you’ll be able to walk to restaurants rather than getting back into the car after a day in the park. Rooms are straightforward and spacious, with refrigerators and microwaves, and breakfast is included. It gives families and budget-conscious travelers a convenient Springdale base without paying top-tier Springdale prices.
And if you are curious, what is a bumbleberry? It’s not actually a real fruit, but you can learn about the bumbleberry legend in the gift shop. And the pie is still absolutely delicious and often sells out (spoiler: it’s a mix of berries, you know, like blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, and blackberries).

Other Springdale Hotels I Like
Driftwood Lodge is another good value option with a pool, hot tub, and Springdale location. I’d compare it directly with Bumbleberry based on rates for your dates.
Hyatt Place Springdale is a good fit if you prefer a familiar chain hotel, want Hyatt points, or value a predictable hotel experience with breakfast and pool amenities.
Looking for more Springdale options?
It’s a pretty compact town, but I’d make sure you are on the shuttle line.
Glamping Near Zion National Park
Zion is one of the places where glamping actually makes sense. The desert scenery and dark skies are part of the experience, and several properties let you spend the night outdoors without giving up a real bed and bathroom.
The trade-off is location. Most glamping properties are farther from Zion’s South Entrance than Springdale hotels, so you’re choosing the experience as much as the convenience.
My Pick for Glamping – Under Canvas ⭐
Under Canvas sits on 196 acres of desert landscape near Zion, with safari-style tents, real beds, and several tent categories with private bathrooms and hot showers.
The Stargazer tents have a viewing window above the bed, and the property offers on-site dining, nightly fires and s’mores, live programming, and dark-sky experiences. There is no traditional electricity or air conditioning in the tents, so this still feels like an outdoor stay.
Why I’d choose it: This is a destination experience in its own right, particularly for couples or families who want something memorable beyond a standard hotel.

A More Affordable Glamping Option: Zion Wildflower Resort
If you like the idea of glamping but Under Canvas is outside your budget, Zion Wildflower Resort is worth comparing. It offers canvas tents, covered wagons, and bungalows, with different bathroom configurations depending on the accommodation type.

Staying on Zion’s East Side
The east side of Zion is a completely different base from Springdale. I wouldn’t choose it if your main goal is to spend every day hiking the Narrows, Angels Landing, and other trails in Zion Canyon.
I would choose it if you want a quieter setting, access to the east side of the park, or a location that works particularly well as part of a Zion-to-Bryce Canyon road trip.
My Pick on the East Side – Zion Ponderosa Ranch Resort ⭐
Zion Ponderosa Ranch Resort sits just outside Zion’s East Entrance and feels much more like an adventure resort than a traditional hotel.
The property has cabins, vacation homes, glamping and camping options, along with a pool, horseback riding, ziplining, UTV tours, guided hikes, and other activities.
That makes it especially appealing for families because the resort itself gives you things to do when you’re not inside the national park. It’s also close to east-side trail access, including the area used to reach Observation Point via East Mesa Trail.
The trade-off is access to Zion Canyon. Reaching Springdale and the main canyon attractions requires driving through the park and the Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel, so I wouldn’t use this as a substitute for Springdale without considering what you plan to do each day.
Why I’d choose it: Zion Ponderosa works especially well when the resort experience, east-side hiking, or continuing toward Bryce Canyon is part of the trip. It can also be a part of a split-stay strategy, staying both in Springdale and here on your way to Bryce.

Staying in La Verkin or Hurricane: The Budget Alternative
If Springdale hotel prices are too high, La Verkin and Hurricane are the first places I’d look for lower rates. You’ll find more chain hotels, restaurants, and everyday services, and room rates can be significantly lower than they are right outside the park.
The trade-off is driving. You’ll need to drive toward Springdale each morning, and if parking near the park is full, you may still need to park in town and use the Springdale shuttle.
My Pick for Value With a Drive: La Quinta Inn & Suites La Verkin ⭐
For a straightforward chain hotel, La Quinta Inn & Suites, La Verkin is a practical choice.
You get breakfast, a pool, and generally lower rates than you’d pay for a comparable room in Springdale. If you’re only saving a small amount per night, I’d rather stay in Springdale and avoid the extra drive.
Why I’d choose it: This makes sense when the savings are substantial enough to justify the additional commute.
A Fun Add-On: OutpostX
OutpostX isn’t a hotel I’d use as a base for visiting Zion, but it can be a fun one-night addition to a larger Southern Utah road trip if you are a Star Wars fan.
You can drive a landspeeder and stay in pods that look like they are from Tatooine. It is on your way to or from Las Vegas. And it is a good way to explore the Kolob Canyon region of Zion on the West side on your drive to Springdale.
Who It Is For
Star Wars fans. Families with kids who would lose their minds over the idea of driving a landspeeder and sleeping on Tatooine.

Zion Hotel Booking Tips
Book early for Springdale and Zion Lodge. The most convenient hotels can become expensive or sell out for popular spring, summer, and fall dates.
Understand the shuttle system before choosing your hotel. During most of the year, you won’t be driving your own car up Zion Canyon Scenic Drive. Springdale hotels near a town shuttle stop can make your trip much easier.
Don’t book based on the phrase “near Zion.” A hotel 30 or 45 minutes from Springdale may still market itself as a Zion hotel. Map the actual driving time to the Zion Canyon Visitor Center.
Compare the savings with the extra drive. Paying $50 less per night may not feel like a bargain if you’re adding an hour or more of driving every day.
Check parking policies. Some Springdale hotels charge separately for parking, so include that when comparing rates.
If you’re continuing to Bryce Canyon, consider the east side for your final night. It can save backtracking and set you up better for the next part of the trip.
Frequently Asked Questions About Where to Stay Near Zion
What is the best place to stay for Zion National Park?
For most visitors, I recommend Springdale. It’s immediately outside Zion’s South Entrance, has plenty of restaurants and hotels, and the Springdale shuttle connects you with the pedestrian entrance to the park.
Is it better to stay inside Zion National Park or in Springdale?
Staying at Zion Lodge gives you the experience of sleeping inside Zion Canyon and excellent access to the park. Springdale gives you far more hotel and restaurant choices and is so close to the entrance that it’s my recommendation for most travelers.
Is Zion Lodge worth staying at?
Yes, if being inside the park is important to you. The rooms are fairly simple, but you’re paying for the location in the middle of Zion Canyon.
Can Zion Lodge guests drive into Zion Canyon?
Zion Lodge guests with overnight reservations can drive to the lodge and park there during shuttle season. They cannot use their vehicle to drive farther up Zion Canyon to the other trailheads. You’ll still use the park shuttle or walk from the lodge.
How far in advance should I book Zion Lodge?
Zion Lodge currently accepts reservations up to 12 months in advance. For popular dates, I would book as early as possible.
Do I need a car if I stay in Springdale?
You’ll likely want a car for reaching Zion and exploring other parts of Southern Utah, but during much of the year you may barely use it while you’re staying in Springdale. The Springdale shuttle connects town with the park entrance, and the Zion Canyon shuttle takes you into the canyon.
Is it cheaper to stay outside Springdale?
Usually. La Verkin and Hurricane often have lower hotel rates, but you’ll add driving each day.
Should I stay on the east or west side of Zion?
For a first Zion trip focused on Zion Canyon, Springdale on the west side is usually the best choice. The east side works well for a quieter stay, east-side hiking, resort activities or travelers continuing to Bryce Canyon.
Where should families stay near Zion?
For families who want to be in Springdale, I like Desert Pearl Inn for its larger rooms and kitchenettes. Zion Ponderosa is another strong family choice if you want resort activities and don’t mind staying on the east side.
Is glamping near Zion worth it?
It can be if the lodging experience itself is part of the trip. Under Canvas Zion is my top glamping choice, but I wouldn’t choose glamping solely as a cheaper substitute for a Springdale hotel.

Planning a Zion Vacation?
Where you stay at Zion affects much more than where you sleep. It changes how you use the shuttle system, how much driving you do every day, and how easily you can get an early start.
